Copper Kings Win Big then split with Yard Dogs
Sunday, June 13, 2010

Wednesday brought a Baseball International Group team from Tucson to the ballpark and the Copper Kings continued with their high scoring ways.  They scored 9 runs in the first, 7 in the fifth and added 9 more in various innings for a final score of 25 - 4. Tyler Berg went 5 for 5 and batted for the cycle with a single, 2 doubles, a triple, his 5th homer of the season and batted in 10. Dominic Gamboa and Evan Carter each added another HR, Carter was 3 for 5 with 5 RBI's.

In Friday night's first game the Tucson Yard Dogs and the Kings pitching started off the game well and the score was 2 - 0 Dogs through six innings. The Dogs bats came alive in the seventh to score 6 runs and their pitchers held on to take an 8 - 0 win. In the second game, both teams put plenty of men on base but not many turned into runs. The Kings managed 12 hits for only 4 runs with Carlos Martinez and Gamboa batting in 2 runs each. The Yard Dogs left 10 on base and scored 2 runs to split the doubleheader.

"One of our biggest problems was complacency of some of our guys taking signs." said Kings manager Bill Moore. "So we offered "memory enhancing speed training" to some of the players and they did a much better job on Saturday when they had the chance."

Saturday's first game brought great Yard Dogs pitching that held the Kings to 3 hits and no runs. It was the polar opposite for the Kings pitching and they got spanked for 14 runs. The second game saw both sides pitch well. The Copper Kings managed 5 runs on 5 hits with Taylor Stone knocking in 2. The score was 3 - 2 Kings after six and the relief pitching held on for a final score of Kings 5, Yard Dogs 2.

Coach Moore commented "Even with the split there was good learning and team building this weekend. The guy's have even gotten together to put on a little dance in the fifth for the fans, win or lose.  The crowd reaction was excellent, lots of laughs and cheers!"
